Duplex type from ancient granites overlaying a saprolytic clay (weathered mother rock) of a chalky texture.

Aspect & Elevation:

Northerly at 180m above sea level, along the On Rus river approximately 8km from the Atlantic Ocean.

Trellis & Plant Density:

Guyot pruned on fence type trellis at +/- 4000 plants per hectare.

Harvest dates:

18th - 29th February 2012 with in some cases 3 passes and careful hand harvesting.

Cellar door:

All grapes hand sorted with a policy of “if in doubt chuck it out!” in order to refine the careful bunch selection done in the vineyard. Mostly whole berry cold soak for gentle extraction with a portion of ripe stalks returned to the must.

Separate parcels are selected and treated individually using both cultivated and spontaneous fermentation, in stainless closed fermenters and large oak vats.

Batches are pressed separately to barrel and matured for 10 months. The bottled wine is cellared for at least a year before release.

Winemaker’s Note:

A warm dry winter followed by sporadic spring and summer rainfall, kept temperatures cool and vines developing well. Warm conditions at harvest and new fruit from younger blocks has brought some exciting darker fruit forward notes to our typically classic style. Black cherry combines with cedar wood smoke and the characteristic savoury complexity of this site with eastern spice and wild herb, showing intrigue beyond its youthfulness. A broad textured palate shows supple tannin a finessed fruit acid balance, finishing with silky length. Medium meat dishes of venison and pork with this wine really coming into its own, complimenting duck pheasant and even seared tuna.
